Our week in the forest!
What glorious autumn weather we have had this week. We have loved our potion and medicine creation in the mud kitchen, the reading corners with books about numbers, weights and measures have been really popular and our role playing has been rich.
The 11th of November was Remembrance Day and we read a beautiful book to the children called “Where the Poppies now Grow” By Hilary Robinson and Martin Impey. Just before eleven o’clock we turned on the radio and observed two minutes of silence and the sound of Big Ben chiming. The children were all very still and quiet before jumping back into play. Throughout the week we have painted poppies using bright red paint with black centres on recycled cardboard and we set up a military hospital with beds and doctors, bandages and medicine from the mud kitchen. The roles of the sick person and the doctor changed constantly as each child explored the different roles that they chose to play.
On Thursday we had two Police officers visit in a lovely clean police car which they drove into our forest. The children were entranced as they tried on hats, caps and helmets. Several children tried on the police vest ladened down with cameras, handcuffs, note books and other police paraphernalia. They all climbed into the police car and took turns pretending to drive. As the police left (with a slightly muddy car) we sat in our lunch circle covering our ears and they drove away waving and letting the siren “Nee Nah” for a split second. The children were delighted by the visit and chattered away all day about what they had seen and what they had experienced. We had some “Police: do not enter” tape which we strung up in the forest and our little adventurers sat behind the tape pretending to be in their police station whilst our hard-working educators were arrested and made to go to jail throughout the afternoon.
Thanks for coming to the forest! See you next time.
